SEOUL, June 21 (Korea Bizwire) – North Korea appears to be undergoing difficulties in the import of some machinery equipment due to the stringent international sanctions slapped on the country earlier this year.

The news was disclosed Tuesday in an article by the country’s main newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, which introduced an army tree nursery on the outskirts of Pyongyang.

The newspaper said that the country was unable to import some mechanical equipment, but now it has overcome such difficulties through facility modernization, raising the fertility of sapling fields, and locally developing essential tools that can help the communist state move forward on forestation.

Last month, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un visited the tree nursery run by the Korean People’s Army (KPA) that recently upgraded its facilities. Kim expressed great satisfaction over the fact that the integrated control system has been successfully built at the tree nursery to ensure the most suitable conditions and environment for cultivating tree saplings.

Related to the media reports, observers here said it is very rare for North Korea to confess to difficulties arising from international sanctions by citing a detailed case. They speculated that while the North claims to have overcome difficulties with the tree nursery, things may not be so easy to overcome in other sectors.

The U.N. Security Council slapped the toughest sanctions yet on the North in early March in response to its fourth nuclear test in January and its long-range rocket launch in February.
