SEOUL, Sept. 17 (Korea Bizwire) — Naver Corp. said Wednesday it is launching the second round of its “Be Local” campaign, a joint effort with the Korea Tourism Organization to introduce foreign visitors to Korea’s trending restaurants, cafes and cultural spots.
The initiative, first tested earlier this year through the Naver Maps app for users set to foreign languages, was seen as a direct challenge to Google Maps, which has pressed Seoul to loosen restrictions on exporting high-resolution mapping data.
The new campaign will go beyond Seoul to include Busan and Gyeongju, both hosts of international events, and will feature discount coupons for dining and cultural venues, as well as reduced fares for intercity buses and rental cars.
Naver said the goal is to help tourists “enjoy Korea like locals,” not only by visiting major landmarks but also by discovering emerging “hot places” and activities.
Tourism officials welcomed the partnership. “This campaign will introduce international visitors to the content Koreans genuinely enjoy while providing tangible benefits to improve their experience,” said Yang Kyung-su, acting head of the Korea Tourism Organization’s tourism industry division.
