SEOUL, Nov. 29 (Korea Bizwire) — Global streaming giant Netflix continues to dominate viewing time in the South Korean streaming market, an industry analysis report showed Monday.
The Korea Information Society Development Institute reported that Netflix accounted for 44 percent of total viewing time among five major streaming services between December 2021 and April 2022, followed by Wavve (27.3 percent), Tving (22.4 percent), Watcha (3.7 percent) and Disney+ (2.6 percent).
Wavve, Tving and Watcha are local over-the-top (OTT) services.
As for the viewing time of original content, Netflix had the highest share at 72.7 percent, followed by Tving (12.6 percent), Wavve (9.4 percent), Disney+ (4 percent) and Watcha (1.3 percent).
Even for the viewing time of Korean original content, Netflix had the highest share at 52.7 percent, followed by Tving (23.9 percent), Wavve (17.8 percent), Disney+ (3.2 percent) and Watcha (2.4 percent).
Among the top 200 movies or shows with the longest views watched from the five major streaming platforms, 97 of them were offered by Netflix, 88 by Tving, 72 by Wavve, 16 by Watcha and 6 by Disney+.
“Original content takes up only a limited proportion of total viewing time since the quantity is relatively limited. Nevertheless, a number of high-quality original series and movies seem to be spearheading the popularity of one streaming platform over the others,” the report said.
In fact, most streaming services took up a similar proportion when it came to the viewing time of non-original content (Netflix 37.6 percent, Wavve 31.3 percent, and Tving 24.6 percent).
The gap widened, however, when comparing the viewing time of original content.
