SEOUL, Nov. 12 (Korea Bizwire) — It is no surprise that mobile devices have gradually been replacing televisions as a new means of watching videos. Now, however, this trend is spreading among older South Koreans as well.
Mezzomedia, a South Korean digital marketing solutions company, conducted a study on participants who are in their forties to ask them about the devices that they normally use to watch videos.
Among the participants, 36 percent said they use mobile devices, while 34.7 percent said they watch videos on television.
Younger people tended to rely more on mobile devices, with 51.3 percent of Korean teenagers saying they use mobile devices, while only 13.9 percent said they use television to watch videos.
The only age group that watched more television than mobile devices was those in their 50s, 39.1 percent of whom said they watch television, while only 29.1 percent said they use mobile devices.
In total, 42 percent of all respondents used mobile devices to watch videos, 32 percent used computers, and 26 percent watched video content on a television.
Among the participants, 58 percent said they watched less television compared to the previous year. As many as 76 percent of the respondents in their thirties said they now watch less television.
The majority of respondents said they don’t watch television since they use other devices, such as computers or mobile devices, to watch videos.
Some also said that they can’t watch the shows they want whenever they want if they’re watching television.
Mobile video apps are gaining ground in data search as well, with 35.7 percent of Korean teenagers saying they used YouTube to look up keywords, while only 33.7 percent searched on portal sites.
The average time spent watching videos was 9.2 hours per week. Teenagers spent the most time watching videos at 13.2 hours.
Those in their 20s watched 9.7 hours of videos, compared to 10.1 hours, 8 hours and 7.6 hours for those in their 30s, 40s and 50s, respectively.
