POHANG, Aug. 26 (Korea Bizwire) — For the past five months, a fire has burned day and night in the heart of Pohang.
Which is why the city announced on August 24 that it has begun the construction of a ring of fire-resistant glass and a platform around the fire in order to turn it into a local must-see attraction.
The fire started in March, when the city began tearing up the decrepit train tracks between the former Pohang Station and Hyoja Station in order to turn the area into a park.
An excavator unearthed a bed of natural gas, which caught fire and hasn’t been extinguished since.
The city plans to invest 100 million won by early next year to turn the site into a unique “Fire Park”.
In July, city officials also reached an agreement with the Korea Gas Corporation and the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources to inspect the surrounding area to ascertain the extent of the natural gas deposit.
