SEOUL, Aug. 24 (Korea Bizwire) — Police plans to introduce an artificial intelligence (AI)-based black box video decoding system to better cope with fast-growing public interest reports on traffic law violations.
The National Police Agency said Tuesday it is developing an AI system in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and ICT to automatically decode footage of traffic law violations from car black box videos submitted through public interest reports.
Once the development is completed, the AI system will contribute to greatly enhancing the efficiency of police work by automatically classifying and sorting out about 30 different types of traffic law violation cases, including traffic signal violations.
The NPA said it would spend 1.7 billion won (US$1.26 million) for the development of the AI system, which is expected to be completed by next year.
It plans to enhance the deciphering accuracy by making the AI learn about 100,000 cases of public interest report videos.
The NPA said that the development of the AI-based deciphering system is aimed at better coping with public interest reports, which are growing at an explosive pace year after year.
The number of public interest reports submitted to the police over the past three years has been on an upward trend, rising from 1.33 million in 2019 to 2.12 million in 2020 and 2.9 million in 2021.
