SEOUL, April 22 (Korea Bizwire)South Korea’s steel giant POSCO said Wednesday that it had developed a Smart Safety Ball, a smart device designed to prevent accidents in enclosed workplaces, for the first time in the world.

The device enables users to sense in advance whether harmful gases exist in enclosed spaces.

Before work in an enclosed space, the Safety Ball can be thrown into the space to measure the density of gas, thereby preventing accidents.

Previously, it was inconvenient to measure gas density in an enclosed workplace as it required the user to siphon gas with a long tube or make use of a portable sensor.

The smart safety ball features a diameter of 60-millimeter and a weight of 100 grams, and is similar in size to a tennis ball. It can measure three different types of gases, including oxygen, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide.

The measured value can be checked in real time through dedicated applications installed on devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs.

If the measured value exceeds safe levels, a message and location information is sent to the pre-registered employees and managers.
