POHANG, Dec. 22 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s top steelmaker POSCO’s steel plant in Pohang has stepped up to preserve a traditional Korean forge.
The plant held an opening ceremony for the newly renovated Gyeoncheon Blacksmith in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province on Monday.
The smithy, which first opened in 1946, has been in operation for two generations. Showing signs of aging, the forge was wearing out, with the risk of a short circuit.
In response, the POSCO plant helped the smithy set up a new entrance, replaced the old roof and electrical wiring, and repaired the inner, outer walls and the chimney to keep the smithy in business.
The plant also provided seats for customers, decorations designed after the blacksmith, 500 kilograms of steel plate and a new signboard.
POSCO is developing and providing new materials to help traditional blacksmiths that make homi, traditional Korean hand plows.
