SEOUL, April 1 (Korea Bizwire) — On Wednesday, the Korea Legal Aid Center for Family Relations, a provider of free legal consultation services, unveiled statistics and analysis on the legal aid it extended last year with respect to lawsuits to secure child support payments.
Among the 151 cases of legal aid, the number of lawsuits filed to request child support payments totaled 28 cases, while the number of lawsuits filed to request the compliance of debtors who failed to abide by a court payment order stood at 123 cases.
In the past, most lawsuits filed to request child support payments ended in a verdict of less than 50 percent of the requested amount.
However, for those requesting future child support payments, 50 to 100 percent of the requested amount was acknowledged in most cases.
An analysis of the 123 lawsuits filed to request the compliance of debtors who failed to abide by a court payment order showed that 60 cases (48.8 percent) involved unpaid child support payments ranging from 10-30 million won (US$8,880-26,600).
There were another 18 cases (14.6 percent) with outstanding payments ranging from 30 million won to 50 million won, followed by 14 cases (11.4 percent) for 5 million won to 10 million won.
Among the 151 individuals who applied for legal aid last year, women accounted for 120, about four times higher than men (31).
By family type, the proportion of single-mother families accounted for the largest share at 75.6 percent, followed by single-father families at 20.5 percent and unmarried single mother families at 3.9 percent.
