SEOUL, March 31 (Korea Bizwire) — The Ministry of Environment signed an agreement with the Korean Animal Industry Association and 11 raccoon cafes on Thursday to begin a pilot project to register raccoons through microchip implants.
The agreement has been designed to keep raccoons, a foreign, invasive species in the local ecosystem, safe and healthy through cooperation between the public and private sectors.
In accordance with the agreement, wireless identification microchips will be implanted in a total of 28 raccoons owned by animal cafes.
Animal cafes will complete the registration of raccoons by May 31 this year and ensure an appropriate dwelling environment.
In case of a raccoon’s death or transfer to another owner, the animal cafe should notify the ministry’s local branch office within 10 days.
The Korean Animal Industry Association will actively engage with animal cafes to ensure that they are abiding by the commitments laid out in the agreement.
