SEOUL, Oct. 17 (Korea Bizwire) — A recent study found that remote at-home brain stimulus treatment can help with the recovery process among individuals whose cognitive ability has declined due to the aftereffects of a stroke.
Researchers from Samsung Medical Center carried out at-home transcranial direct current stimulation treatment through online remote surveillance for 26 stroke patients with serious cognitive disorders.
Transcranial direct current stimulation is a method that uses brain stimulation to cure cognitive disorders. In the past, this method has been available only to hospitalized patients since professional therapists have to control the equipment.
To check if this type of treatment was effective even at home, the research team installed the equipment at the homes of the patients, and carried out electroceutical treatment day, five times a week in 30-minute increments.
The research team ensured that only professional therapists could adjust the duration and strength of the treatment.
As a result, one month after undergoing electroceutical treatment, the cognitive ability of the patients improved by about 30 percent compared to before undergoing the procedure.
In contrast, a control group that underwent a similar placebo study showed no improvement.
