SEOUL, Oct. 19 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s retail industry is enjoying a surge in sales of Halloween-related items ahead of the Halloween weekend.
Discount retailer Emart Inc. saw annual sales of Halloween items rise by more than 20 percent every year from October 2019 to October 2021.
By generation, the consumer base has expanded from those in their 30s and 40s to all age groups.
The share of purchases of Halloween items among those in their 30s and 40s slid to 78.2 percent last year from 95.5 percent in 2018.
In contrast, the share of purchasers in their 50s and 60s increased from 3.5 percent to 16.8 percent during the same period.
CU, South Korea’s top convenience store chain, also said sales of Halloween items during the period from October 24 to 31, 2021 marked a robust year-to-year growth of 33.5 percent.
During this period, sales of candies and chocolates jumped by 29.5 percent and 24.1 percent, respectively, compared to a year earlier.
