SEOUL, Dec. 14 (Korea Bizwire)South Korea and China agreed to share information on contagious animal diseases and step up cooperation in the quarantine sector, Seoul’s agriculture ministry said Thursday.

South Korean agriculture minister Kim Yong-rok met with his Chinese counterpart Han Changfu in Beijing and signed a memorandum of understanding on animal safety and quarantine cooperation.

Under the agreement, quarantine officials of the two nations will share information on contagious animal infections, including bird flu and foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), and simplify the veterinary medicine registration process, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs said.

They also discussed ways to conduct joint studies on avian influenza and develop vaccines for FMD to help prevent the spread of such contagious diseases in the region, the ministry said.

Their meeting took place on the sidelines of a summit between South Korean president Moon Jae-in and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, in which they discussed ways to improve diplomatic relations and forge closer economic ties.
