SEOUL, July 7 (Korea Bizwire)South Korean researchers have developed new technology that can churn out a massive amount of bio-aviation fuel using vegetable oil, which generates less carbon emissions than petroleum-based jet fuel.

The the state-run Agency for Defense Development (ADD) said Tuesday that it had succeeded in securing technology that can produce bio-aviation fuel derived from palm oil.

The agency improved and developed a solid catalyst technology concerning vegetable oil’s decarbonization response, decomposition and structural shift that that are needed to mass-produce bio aviation-fuel.

It confirmed that this bio-aviation fuel can be used as a replacement fuel after testing its application in a military turbine engine.

The agency has been engaged in the development of core technologies since 2016 to better cope with the carbon offsetting and reduction scheme of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) that started trial operations this year.

The carbon offsetting and reduction scheme is a new ICAO regulation that requires airlines to purchase carbon emission rights on the basis of their assigned greenhouse gas offsetting quota, or use bio-aviation fuel.
