SEOUL, Feb. 25 (Korea Bizwire)South Korea will work to develop reference materials for advanced strategic industries, such as semiconductor and battery, by 2028 as part of efforts to strengthen its global competitiveness in the sectors, the industry ministry said Tuesday.

The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) will be in charge of the four-year plan to develop reference materials for semiconductor, display, rechargeable battery and bio industries, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

A reference material is a standard material used for measurement and testing of other materials or to calibrate equipment.

Under the plan, the KATS will first provide support for 10 projects this year, including one aimed at developing reference material for measuring thin films of next-generation displays.

The ministry said the development of reference materials will help bolster the credibility of key materials and equipment of the country’s advanced industries and their global competitiveness.

It will also help with the country’s efforts to gain technological independence by developing indigenous core materials, the ministry added.
