DAEJEON, Oct. 20 (Korea Bizwire)A South Korean research lab has cleared the way for non-software professionals to be able to develop their own Internet of Things (IoT) devices in an easy and simple way.

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) announced on Monday that it will open its software development program for IoT devices to the public.

The state-supported institute’s software framework consists of five different types of light-weight operating systems, firmware such as sensors and telecommunications and resource management and low voltage management modules.

Developing IoT devices, in general, requires professional knowledge of software. To change the operation of the devices, developers also need to write complex programs.

Using ETRI’s program, however, not only professionals but also non-professionals can complete their own software.

The institute said that all of the five operating systems comply with international standard platforms and can be applied easily, thereby making compatibility work unnecessary.

Amid the trend of IoT devices getting lighter, the ETRI also plans to release a version that is suitable for ultra-small devices.

The institute’s development environment tools enable various configurations of the programs, including the inter-developer collaboration programming and the drag and drop graphic programming.

The institute will open its programs through the source code sharing service GitHub.
