SEOUL, July 23 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea’s nuclear safety watchdog said Wednesday it plans to urge its Chinese and Japanese counterparts to monitor Japan’s future releases of Fukushima water in line with international safety standards during a high-level tripartite meeting later this week.
The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) will attend the 15th Top Regulators’ Meeting (TRM) of South Korea, Japan and China, set to take place in Beijing on Thursday and Friday, the commission said.
Launched in 2008, the trilateral TRM was established to promote information sharing on nuclear regulations and enhance cooperation on emergency response systems. The previous 14th TRM was held virtually in 2022 and hosted by South Korea.
During the upcoming meeting, the NSSC said it will seek details on Japan’s plans to manage and inspect the Fukushima nuclear power plant. It will also call for concerted efforts to ensure Japan’s continued compliance with international safety standards in releasing treated wastewater.
The three countries are also expected to discuss the outcomes of joint nuclear disaster response drills held in South Korea in 2023 and in Japan earlier this year.
“We will continue efforts through the TRM to ensure that joint disaster response drills are not just repetitive exercises but practical training that strengthens our emergency preparedness systems,” the NSSC said.
