SEJONG, Jan. 30 (Korea Bizwire)The Korea Development Institute (KDI), a South Korean state-run think tank, said Tuesday it has been ranked 18th in an international survey of think tanks around the globe, a dramatic rise from its previous 44th-ranked spot.

The survey was conducted by the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program at the University of Pennsylvania (TTCSP).

KDI ranked 5th in the global top 10 of non-U.S. think tanks and maintained its top spot as the leading research institute in Asia for the fifth consecutive year.

The South Korean institution ranked first in the “Top International Development Think Tanks” category, surpassing the Brookings Institution and Chatham House. Its ranking also significantly rose in three other categories — best managed, outstanding policy-oriented research programs and domestic economic policy.

TTCSP has released the annual ranking of global think tanks since 2006. The ranking is based on compiled data from recommendations by scholars, policymakers, journalists and field experts from around the world as well as online surveys and expert panel evaluation results.

For the 2017 report, approximately 3,750 experts from various fields evaluated 7,800 think tanks.
