SEOUL, Feb. 19 (Korea Bizwire) – South Korean washers have received top-notch grades from a major U.S. product evaluator, even after Washington slapped steep tariffs on some of their products, industry watchers said Saturday.
Among the top 15 large-capacity washing machines selected by U.S.-based industry tracker Consumer Reports, eight models were made by two South Korean tech giants — Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc.
Three LG washers were selected in the category of high-efficiency top loaders, while three Samsung and two LG products were picked for front-loaders, the report said.
The selected washing machines scored “Very Good” or “Excellent” on their washing performance and efficiency of water and energy use.
The latest finding showed high consumer preference for premium Korean products despite Washington’s move to impose tougher trade barriers against them to protect its domestic firms.
The U.S. government began imposing steep tariffs on imported washers on Feb. 7, which came in response to a safeguard petition filed by U.S.home appliance maker Whirlpool. A 20 percent tariff will be applied on the first 1.2 million imported washers in the first year and a 50 percent tariff on machines beyond that number.
