SEOUL, Feb. 14 (Korea Bizwire) — Sales of hobby supplies are rising as a growing number of South Koreans are refusing to go outdoors following the coronavirus outbreak.
Gmarket, a major online shopping mall, reported that sales of hobby supplies grew by more than 300 percent in the last seven days compared to the same period last year.
Sales of oil and watercolor painting supplies doubled and quadrupled, respectively, while sales of drawing supplies and tools for calligraphy rose by 166 percent and 214 percent, respectively.
Sales of classical guitars, digital pianos, and ukuleles rose by 231 percent, 63 percent, and 440 percent, and sales of home exercise equipment were also up.
Many South Koreans have chosen to stay away from movie theaters and read books or watch movies at home instead. Sales of DVDs doubled, and novels and essays saw sales rise by 58 percent and 269 percent, respectively.
Donuts (905 percent), pies (26 percent), corn dogs (33 percent), and cheese sticks (69 percent) also saw significant sales increases.
