SEOUL, Jun. 26 (Korea Bizwire) – Samsung Electronics announced on June 25 that it will add four more languages to its Galaxy AI service, which includes interpretation capabilities, by the end of this year.
The on-device real-time interpretation and translation function of Galaxy AI currently supports 16 languages, including Korean, Chinese, English, French, and Japanese. The languages slated for addition this year are Swedish, Dutch, Romanian, and Turkish.
To achieve this goal, more than 20 research and development (R&D) centers worldwide are currently engaged in language model research and development.
For instance, the Arabic language service, which is already available, faces the challenge of balancing standard Arabic with the numerous dialects used in everyday conversation — up to 30 different varieties. To address this, the Samsung Research Jordan (SRJO) center collected voice recording data from various dialects and directly converted them into text. This process enables the AI to understand different Arabic dialects while responding in standard Arabic.
The Samsung Research Vietnam (SRV) center has developed a language model capable of recognizing the subtle tonal differences in Vietnamese. Meanwhile, the Samsung Research Brazil (SRBR) center, which focuses on languages in Central and South America, has been developing and improving language models for Spanish, which is widely used in the region but varies from country to country.
Samsung Electronics explained that before releasing a Galaxy AI language model, it undergoes both quantitative evaluations of language characteristics and grammar, as well as qualitative assessments to verify cultural knowledge and understanding.
