SEOUL, April 12 (Korea Bizwire) — Samsung Electronics Co. plans to expand its eco-friendly project by using recycled parts for maintenance, as the company decided to use recycled materials for the production of smartphones.
The tech giant plans to introduce a new “manufacturer-certified recycled materials program” early this year for all smartphone repairs and provide it as one of the options to customers, industry sources said.
The program is aimed at lowering customer costs and environmental damage by using parts recycled from old phones for repair.
For instance, the repair cost for a damaged display, which stands at around 200,000 won (US$162) on average, can be reduced to 100,000 won if recycled parts are used.
This new measure indicates that Samsung will expand its use of recycled materials not only in production but also in maintenance.
The company also plans to introduce “self-service repair” programs that are already available in the U.S. to bolster consumer rights.
The company already announced it will allow U.S. consumers to repair smartphones on their own later this year by purchasing parts themselves. The self-service repair program will be available for the Galaxy S20, Galaxy S21 and Galaxy Tab S7+.
