SEOUL, Sept. 24 (Korea Bizwire) — An analysis showed that school violence is becoming less physical. One factor behind this is the difficulty in entering into face-to-face contact due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the data that Rep. Lee Tan-hee of the Democratic Party received from the National Police Agency, the number of ‘assault and bodily harm’ cases, the typical type of school violence, declined sharply from 9,396 cases in 2016 to 5,863 cases last year.
The share of ‘assault and bodily harm’ cases in overall school violence cases also fell from 73 percent in 2016 to 51 percent in 2021.
Instead, the number of sexual violence cases that use non-physical force and are hard to detect shot up to 2,462 cases last year from 1,364 cases in 2016. The number of insult and defamation cases also rose from 301 cases in 2016 to 733 cases last year.
The number of coercion cases grew from 103 cases in 2016 to 224 cases in 2021.
