SEOUL, Sept. 21 (Yonhap) – Sechskies, an iconic ’90s K-pop band who made a surprise comeback last year, released its fifth full-length album on Thursday.

“If last year’s songs were previews, this time around it’s as if we’re restarting all over with the fans,” lead singer Kang Sung-hoon said during a press conference for the band’s new album ”Another Light” at CGV Cheongdam Cine City in southern Seoul.

Having debuted in 1997, Sechskies enjoyed a successful run as one of the leading first-generation K-pop boy bands until it broke up in 2000. The team, minus member Ko Ji-yong, surprised fans in June last year with a comeback digital single “Three Words” under YG Entertainment.

“Another Light,” its first full-length album in 18 years, consists of nine new songs, including double lead tracks “Something Special,” and the mid-tempo easy-listening dance number “Smile.” The album was created by YG’s in-house team, including Tablo of Epik High, Mino and Seunghoon of WINNER and Future Bounce.

Back in its heyday, Sechskies was known for its dramatic-yet-powerful dance hits such as “School Byeolgok” and “The Way This Guy Lives – Pomsaengpomsa.” With the five members either in or nearing their 40s, the band seems to have mellowed out.

“‘Something Special’ is a song that we can express most naturally today. During our heyday, techno and big beat genres were in vogue. But we’re inan age when such music isn’t in demand,” rapper Eun Ji-won said.

Members said they aren’t concerned with performance on music charts. Rather, they’re going all in with the aim of enjoying themselves.

“We hope to enjoy the stage and not try too hard to compete withyounger idols,” Eun said. Jang added that he hoped Sechskies can set a precedent of becoming a long-running idol act by constantly connecting with the public.

Lee Jae-jin recalled last year’s reunion being like a gift to the band from the fans. “This album and our activities in the future will hopefully be received as our presents to the fans,” he said.

The five-member band has held a series of fan events marking its 20th anniversary this year. It is scheduled to hold a concert at the Gocheok Skydome in western Seoul on Saturday.
