SEOUL, March 11 (Korea Bizwire) — The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Tuesday it will create urban vegetable gardens covering a total of 52,989 square meters of land in the jurisdiction this year.
This is equivalent in size to more than seven soccer fields, which normally have an area of 7,140 square meters.
The city, which will invest 4.6 billion won (US$3.85 million) in the project, plans to create a total of 15,000 square meters of garden in 25 abandoned areas that can be used for more than three years.
The local government will also create gardens on the roof of 80 buildings that can reduce radiation levels in the summer, totaling 5,817 square meters of roof space, and 6,800 square meters at 80 daycare centers and schools.
Building roofs will have to undergo structural safety assessment and waterproof treatment before the gardens are created. The cost of structural safety assessment will be covered by the city.
The city will sell 29,000 “garden boxes” to create vegetable gardens in verandas or windows of households. Some 4,000 will be distributed free of charge to welfare facilities.
