SEOUL, March 25 (Korea Bizwire) — The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Thursday it will expand animal adoption facilities to make it easier for citizens to adopt abandoned animals.
The city government joined hands with a local animal protection agency to start an animal adoption cafe in Dongdaemun District, offering protection for abandoned animals and counseling for their adoption.
The adoption rate at animal protection facilities in the suburbs currently stands at 33.6 percent, which falls short of the 54.5 percent reported at facilities located in urban areas.
In response, the city government plans to provide subsidies to expand the number of animal adoption centers directly governed by district authorities.
The number of abandoned animals in Seoul has dropped in the last three years, going from 8,200 in 2018 to 5,600 in 2021.
