SEOUL, Aug. 10 (Korea Bizwire) — The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Wednesday it will shift from solvent-based paints to water-based paints for automobile refinishing, as part of its strategy to mitigate ozone level concerns.
The city government has entered into agreements with Kangnam Jevisco Co., Samhwa Paints Industrial Co., KCC Corp., and the Korea Automobile Inspection Maintenance Association to curtail the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) stemming from car paints.
To facilitate this transition, the city plans to allocate 320 million won (US$243,250) to support 100 automobile maintenance companies currently utilizing solvent-based paints.
This financial aid will enable these companies to shift to water-based paints, necessitating specialized equipment such as spray guns and electronic scales.
Paint manufacturers will implement measures to restrict the distribution of base materials used in solvent-based paints.
They will also offer equipment assistance and pertinent training to facilitate the utilization of water-based paints.
The association will play a pivotal role in motivating its member maintenance companies to adopt water-based paints.
