SEOUL, Aug. 15 (Korea Bizwire) – In a solemn ceremony marking the 79th anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon participated in the traditional bell-ringing event at Bosingak Pavilion in Jongno on August 15.
The annual ceremony, a cornerstone of Korea’s Liberation Day celebrations, saw Oh join a group of 11 distinguished individuals in ringing the historic bell.
Among the participants was Huh Mi-mi, a 2024 Paris Olympics judo silver medalist and the great-great-granddaughter of the late independence activist Heo Seok.
Following the bell-ringing, Oh led the assembled crowd in waving the South Korean flag and chanting “Long live Korean independence” three times.
The ceremony culminated with the mayor and approximately 500 citizens joining voices to sing “Seoul’s Anthem,” a song traditionally associated with Liberation Day festivities.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that the day’s commemorations would continue with a series of events.
These included “Book-Reading Seoul Plaza,” featuring literature related to Korea’s independence movement, and a special Liberation Day concert by the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.
