SEOUL, Oct. 20 (Korea Bizwire) — An augmented reality (AR) navigation service will be introduced at one of the largest department stores in the country.
On Monday, South Korea’s top mobile carrier SK Telecom Co. signed an agreement with Shinsegae Inc., Shinsegae Property and MAXST to jointly introduce 5G multi-access edge computing (MEC)-based AR content services.
The 5G MEC AR navigation service is up for a test run next year at Starfield COEX Mall before its official launch in 2022.
The navigation service allows users to look up preferred destinations or objects, offering AR-based navigation assistance to allow them to locate their destination in a complex, populated environment.
It also enables customers to engage with various brands and products through 3D AR content by touching on a brand name displayed on a digital screen.
SK Telecom will be in charge of providing the 5G MEC platforms, 5G cloud computing technology and infrastructure for a hands-on content platform.
South Korean retail giant Shinsegae will be in charge of planning and operations while MAXST will develop indoor and outdoor AR content.
