SK Telecom-DSME to Jointly Develop “Smart Ship”

SEOUL, May 28 (Korea Bizwire)After cooperation for the smart shipyard, SK Telecom and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) decided to work together for the development of “smart ships.”

On May 27, the two companies signed an agreement for the development of the smart ship. A smart ship is a next-generation vessel equipped with global communications networked sailing control and integrated service for various facilities in the vessel based on smart ICT technology.

Prior to the smart ship project, SK Telecom and DSME have cooperated in the construction and management of a smart shipyard in DSME’s Okpo dockyard equipping with a real-time quality control and material tracking system based on the LTE network. SK Telecom also offered a smart office software program to DSME for the employees’ more effective and safe job performance.

Now, the two companies have joined to develop the smart ship and global sailing control system to raise the competitiveness of DSME in the global shipbuilding industry. To that end, they will prioritize the construction of systems and services in sailing control, automation, unmanned control and safety and security based on connected technology in the global communications network.

The two companies have also agreed to make visible results in two sectors within this year like prior application of wired and wireless communications based on the Internet of Things, location-based services and LTE and the preemption of the smart ship market by commercial application of available technologies.

Separately, DSME was named the Safety Contractor of the Year by Chevron Corporation’s Project Resources Company 2014 during the Contractor Safety Forum held at Houston, the United States, on May 23. With the award, DSME’s shipyard was recognized for best-in-class safety performance by the world’s renowned oil company Chevron.

DSME successfully delivered six offshore plant projects to Chevron and is now building two fixed platforms in its Okpo Shipyard which will be deployed in Australia and Angola.
