SEOUL, Sept. 7 (Korea Bizwire) – SK Telecom announced that it would be hosting a general meeting at its Seoul headquarters on September 7 to present its latest product, the AI-integrated navigation system T Map x NUGU.
The pre-NUGU supported T Map had been capable of processing one-word commands, but after being integrated with NUGU, SK Telecom’s AI, users can turn the system on or off, request traffic updates, and raise or lower the volume of the app all through voice commands. Setting up the app after the initial download will need to be done by hand, but thereafter two “wake words”, Aria or Tinker Bell, can be selected in the settings and used accordingly.
According to SK Telecom, the T Map was tested strenuously at the BMW Driving Center located near Incheon International Airport. With windows closed, the test drivers found that when driving under 40 km/h T Map boasted a voice recognition accuracy rate of 96.3 percent. Driving under 80 km/h, the navigation system’s accuracy rate fell slightly to 92.5 percent.
T Map currently offers radio access, weather information, news headlines and daily horoscopes. With the integration of NUGU, listening to music and accessing one’s schedule through Google Calendar have been made available.
SK Telecom revealed that it will add more features through updates in November that will enable drivers to manage incoming phone calls, either by answering or choosing to respond via text that states the estimated time of arrival or simply reads “Currently Driving”. Other advanced capabilities such as ordering at drive-throughs using the app are being considered.
Thanks to its integration with T Map and its 10 million monthly users, the increased verbal input into NUGU will add to its machine learning processes, which will lead to potentially new products and services.
Downloads of T Map X NUGU will be available starting September 7 from the Korean mobile carrier’s app store One Store and September 15 from Google Play. iPhone users will have to wait until October to test out the technology.
Android users with T Map already installed can begin sampling the system via update.
