Soaring Consumer Prices Encourage Home Dining

SEOUL, Oct. 20 (Korea Bizwire)Fresh and processed food sales are on the rise as more people are choosing to dine at home instead of going to a restaurant due to rising consumer prices.

Major online shopping mall Gmarket, citing its sales data for the third quarter of this year, said Wednesday that fresh and processed food sales have jumped significantly from last year.

Among fresh food products, rice and packed kimchi sales jumped by 22 percent and 21 percent, respectively.

Among meat products, chicken and egg sales jumped by 68 percent, pork sales by 28 percent and beef sales by 23 percent.

Among common ingredients, garlic sales jumped by 30 percent, onion sales by 29 percent and mushroom sales by 24 percent.

Among processed food products, cooking oil sales jumped by 30 percent, seasoning sales by 24 percent, pepper paste sales by 15 percent and soy sauce sales by 13 percent.

Sales of processed livestock and fishery products increased by 580 percent and 250 percent, respectively.

The average consumer purchased 18 percent more fresh food and 8 percent more processed food throughout the said period.
