SEOUL, Feb. 12 (Korea Bizwire) — The number of stray cats in Seoul has nearly halved over the last 10 years after animal neuter programs were first launched, the city government has said.
Under the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s cat neuter program, between 5,000 and 8,000 stray cats have been neutered every year in the city’s 25 districts since 2008, with a total of 64,670 cats having been on the receiving end of neuter surgery.
The program saw the number of stray cats plunge from 250,000 in 2013 to 139,000 last year, signaling the success of the city’s push to curb the proliferation of stray cats.
The Seoul government says its neuter programs will continue this year.
“It seems the number of stray cats have been affected by the continuing neuter program over the last 10 years. We plan to perform neuter surgery on around 9,700 cats this year,” the Seoul government said.
Those who wish to neuter stray cats in their community can either call 120 or contact local animal authorities.
Cats neutered by the city’s program will have a visible mark left on their left ear for better recognition.
The Seoul government is also running a food service program for stray cats at 32 locations in parks across the city in collaboration with animal groups.
