SEOUL, April 12 (Korea Bizwire) — The number of campgrounds in South Korea has gone up by more than 1,000 over the past four years with the rising popularity of camping.
The Korea Tourism Association reported that the number of campgrounds across the country reached 3,280 in 2022, up by 407 from the end of the previous year, and a 49.8 percent increase since 2018.
Among them, 82 percent were ordinary campgrounds, while 18 percent were facilities reserved for RV and trailer owners.
Sorted by cities and provinces, Gyeonggi Province was home to 788 campgrounds, accounting for 24 percent of the total.
In contrast, the number of travel agencies tumbled to 20,398 last year, down by 508 from the previous year. Ever since reaching a high in 2018 (22,544), travel agencies have been shrinking in number.
“Every time there is a pandemic situation in the country, the tourism industry was the very first to sustain the impact, and the latest to recover,” an official at a travel agency said.
