SEOUL, Jan. 29 (Korea Bizwire) — Forget the pure, cute and innocent image of Suzy. The singer-actress is back with her first EP in a year with a hardened heart to face up to the sober truth of love.
“Faces of Love” follows her first EP, “Yes? No?” which was released about a year ago, and is her first album as a solo artist since the disbandment of her girl group, missA, in December.
“I see it as a chance to grow more because I now can pursue my own style of music,” she said. “So I hardened my heart more than ever as I prepared for this,” the 23-year-old singer said during a press showcase for the new album in Seoul on Monday.
She apologized to fans of the once popular girl group for not providing sufficient information on the disbandment in advance.
The album “Faces of Love” asks a question about what the fundamental nature of love is, according to the singer.
“Since I began writing lyrics for my songs, I’ve always wanted to put out an album exploring the diverse faces of love sometime, and this is it,” she said.
A week ago, the diva topped local music services when pre-release song “I Love Someone Else” was uploaded.
“When I first heard the song, I was a bit surprised at its being cruel, frank and straightforward. After repeatedly listening and practicing it, I felt the song is more like a kind of excuse or white lie (to let her lover go). So it felt more sad to me. I’m sure it has certain emotions many people can emphasize with.”
Teaming up with rapper DPR LIVE, she tried something new for lead track “Holiday.”
It is a laid back R&B song that feels comfortable and relaxed, a genre the former idol singer has never tried before.
Including the two songs, the album has seven tracks depicting a wide range of emotions that come with love, such as happiness, joy, yearning, sadness and resentment.
The former missA member took part in the album’s overall production process to infuse her own sensibility, according to the album’s PR agency. The 23-year-old singer also showed her talent as a singer-songwriter by participating in the writing of the lyrics of three other songs — “Sober,” “Bad X” and “You All Night.” For the second song, she was also a co-composer.
When questioned about her own process of making songs, she said she usually writes the lyrics first and tries to find the melody that goes well with the story later.
“I’m usually inspired by my daily life, especially when I feel sentimental or lonely while reading books or seeing movies alone. I’m also inspired by stories from my friends.”
Suzy gained further fame as an A-list actress after appearing in the 2012 hit romance film “Architecture 101.” Last year, she won best actress in SBS TV’s year-end drama awards show for her lead role in “While You Were Sleeping” with Lee Jong-suk.
She said she is “greedy” enough to pursue success in both careers and still has a long way to go to do so.
When asked by reporters to score herself in the two areas, she gave herself 40 points out of 100.
“I said ’30 points’ when I received the same question a few years ago. I improved a little bit,” she said, laughing.
