SEOUL, Korea, April 7 (Korea Bizwire) – Where can you buy Mise-en-scene Super Hard Wax at the lowest price? Surprisingly enough, the answer is “at a convenient store,” which does not make much sense considering the reputation of big-box retailers as the stores with best deals.

This particular hair product is sold cheaper at convenient stores by 38 percent to 52 percent than at discount retailers. The old wisdom that if a product costs 100 won at large outlets, the same product would cost about 110 to 120 won at local supermarkets and about 140 won at convenient stores no longer seems to be an eternal truth.

These days, beverages like canned coffee and milk and daily supplies like toothpaste can be purchased at lower cost at convenient store chains. Certain goods are cheaper by 80 percent at the most so one should shop around to find the best deal. According to a recent survey, about 19 items are cheaper by 9 to 52 percent at 7Eleven and CU than at discount outlets.

Such a changeover in price differential is the “buy one get one free” deal which has been offered frequently at convenient stores. While big retailers, which are concerned about Fair Trade Commission regulations and other government authorities, have backed away from buy-one-get-one-free-like promotions, convenient stores have become more actively involved in discount promotions to attract customers.

A 7Eleven manager said, “Buy-one-get-one-free goods can also get an additional 15-percent discount offered in affiliation with a mobile carrier, which can add up to yield a maximum of a 57.5-percent discount.” According to the manager, promotion goods can be purchased more inexpensively than any other retailers.

A discount retailer official said, “Instead of offering buy-one-get-one-free deals, we are offering various other sales events, but we sometimes cannot match the substantial discount offered by convenience stores.” However, the promotion deals offered by convenient stores are in flux so the prices can fluctuate between the best and the worst any time.
