According to the online shopping mall 11st, sales of telescopes have increased 32 percent during the three weeks since ‘The Martian’ opened (October 8 to October 28), compared to the same period last year. Sales of binoculars also jumped by 55 percent.

Lights that create a space-like atmosphere in a room were also in high demand, boosting sales by 42 percent.

The movie ‘The Martian’ chronicles the struggles of Mark Watney (Matt Damon), who is isolated on Mars, and his colleagues at NASA who try to rescue him. It is based on a novel written by Andy Weir.

Thanks to the movie, items related to NASA are also selling well. An air purifier certified by NASA saw its sales jump by 75 percent. Apparel items with the NASA logo also sold well.

Interest in the movie has also lead to interest in the book. The novel ‘The Martian’ increased 11 percent in sales compared to the previous month, and sales of books in the astronomy section also soared by 82 percent.

The movie exceeded four million viewers faster than any other foreign movie in Korea. The accumulated number of viewers until last weekend was 4.5 million.
