SEOUL, Nov. 17 (Korea Bizwire) – The state-run Korean language proficiency test for non-native Korean speakers and ethnic Koreans will be conducted five times at 223 locations in 72 nations next year, the test’s administrator said Friday.

The 57th Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) will take place between April 14-15; the 58th May 19-20; 59th on July 15; the 60th Oct. 20-21; and the 61st will be executed between Nov. 17-18, said the National Institute for International Education under the education ministry.

Notable is that the 59th test will be administered only in five nations — Vietnam, Iran, Japan, Cambodia and Thailand, according to the institute.

TOPIK consists of TOPIK I (listening and reading) and TOPIK II (listening, writing and reading) for a total score of 500 points, and takes 280 minutes.

Launched in 1997, TOPIK is required for people who want to obtain Korean permanent residency or work or study in South Korea as well as those wishing to work for South Korean firms’ overseas branches or plants.

The number of TOPIK applicants steadily increased, rising from 2,692 in 1997 to 34,028 in 2006 and 206,768 in 2015, according to the institute.
