Two Thirds of S. Koreans Prefer Used Car as First Car

SEOUL, Dec. 26 (Korea Bizwire)Consumers who are buying the first car of their life are increasingly turning to used cars.

According to an online survey of 314 men and women conducted by K-Car, a South Korean used car dealer, 67.5 percent of the respondents chose used car as their first car when asked about their preferences.

The reasons cited were poor driving and financial burden.

Respondents say that they want to buy used cars for training purposes because they are not yet proficient at driving. In addition, they can save money because used cars are cheaper than new cars.

Meanwhile, subcompact sedan topped the list at 33.8 percent when asked about the car respondents wanted to purchase as their first car.

This was followed by a compact SUV, at 30.6 percent, the hottest keyword in the local car market recently. Third place was taken by a lightweight car, at 24.2 percent, that is reasonably priced and offers various tax benefits.

Asked when a first car should be purchased, employment came first with 56.7 percent, with more than half of the respondents selected. Next came marriage at 16.9 percent and giving birth at 13.7 percent.
