SEOUL, Feb. 22 (Korea Bizwire) — More than 70 percent of university hospitals accross the country have failed to recruit a single resident for their pediatrics departments for the first half of this year.
Rep. Seo Young-seok of the Democratic Party referred to a report from the Ministry of Health and Welfare that revealed Seoul University Hospital was the only school of all 50 university hospitals to fill all available positions in its pediatrics department.
Only four hospitals recruited more than 50 percent of the resident slots for their pediatrics departments, and 38 out of 50 university hospitals had zero applicants.
Only 20 percent of all resident slots in the pediatrics department have been filled, down from 36 percent in 2021, and 22 percent in 2022. This is only one-fourth of the 84 percent rate of resident slots filled throughout all departments.
