SEOUL, Apr. 3 (Korea Bizwire)Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies are sparking new trends in South Korea’s gaming market, industry watchers said Tuesday, with local developers utilizing them in new titles.

Netmarble Games plan to unveil “Fishing Strike” this month, which is a mobile-based title that provides users with an immersive fishing experience using AR and VR technologies. Users can not only catch some 500 different kinds of fish in various places, but can view the fish caught at a virtual aquarium.

Another South Korean developer, Smilegate, showcased three new titles utilizing VR technology last month, including “Project Y,” where users can take part in a dating simulation.

Other smaller developers are rushing to apply AR technology in their contents, after Apple and Google opened their development tools last year.

Seoul-based 4:33 Creative Lab is currently developing “Ghostbusters World,” where users can hunt and collect ghosts from the franchise.

“Now is the period when developers are commercializing VR and AR contents that were prepared in the past,” an industry watcher said, contending that the technologies will provide smaller developers with an opportunity to expand their presence.
