SEOUL, Aug. 20 (Korea Bizwire) – As controversies continue over the harmful chemical materials in wet tissues, the Korean government has made a countermeasure to reinforce its safety management by categorizing it as a cosmetic product.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced on Aug. 19 that it would include wet tissues for sanitation purpose as cosmetics to raise quality supervision. Currently, they are categorized as industrial products.
As the social demand to review the supervision system for chemical products for daily lives including wet tissues rises and it contains various chemical products, the ministry made the decision along with the international standards that other countries reckon it as cosmetics.
When its proposal is legalized, the producers of wet tissues should abide by the material usage standard for cosmetics. According to the current regulations, there are 1,013 kinds of prohibited materials for cosmetics and 260 materials for the limited use.
Furthermore, only appropriate products which pass the strict product quality tests can be sold in the market and providers should report side effects taking place when consumers use the products.
An official at the ministry said, “These stricter surveillance measures can satisfy the high demands for the safety management on the products.”
