MUAN, Sept. 11 (Korea Bizwire) — The Sinan Youth Orchestra, affectionately known as “1004 Islands” after the number of islands in the area, has been gaining attention these days.
According to the South Jeolla Provincial Assembly, Sinan-gun’s local agricultural technology center recently inked an agreement with the youth orchestra to “create a happier and productive” rural society.
According to the agreement, the former promised to publicly fund the musical activities of the orchestra.
Founded in 2011, the orchestra is composed of approximately 50 primary, middle and high school students living in the Sinan area.
The young members of the orchestra take the trouble of travelling to the island of Aphaedo each Saturday to practice.
The creation of the orchestra was only possible with the help of private supporters and parents who wanted to nurture the dreams of children from small islands throughout the region.
Thanks to the help of Lee Hyeok-je, the orchestra’s leader and member of the provincial legislative body, Hong Myeong-jin, the conductor, and other contributors, the orchestra has been putting on regular subscription concerts every year.
As the orchestra continues to attract attention in the local community, the Sinan Education Office has started to fund the orchestra.
Lee, the orchestra’s leader, said that the agreement was like a dream come true, and encouraged the student members of the orchestra even further by suggesting they work hard “in order to perform on an international stage.
