Mini Watermelons Coming Soon to S. Korean Supermarkets

SACHEON, June 1 (Korea Bizwire)Miniature-sized watermelons grown from suspended pots will soon be made available for South Korean consumers.

Gyeongnam Sacheon Agricultural Development & Technology Center will begin selling fun-size watermelons grown via nutriculture through stores of the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation, better known as Nonghyup, in the southeastern city of Sacheon.

These watermelons are one-fourth the size of ordinary products, weighing between 1.2 and 2 kilograms each with an average sugar content of more than 11 brix, and are expected to sell for 7,000 to 10,000 won (US$5.70-8.15).

The center plans to distribute the nutriculture method of growing watermelons to local farms to make miniature watermelons a new agricultural specialty.
