Sugar Sales Decline Due to Growing Health Concerns

SEOUL, Sept. 28 (Korea Bizwire)Sugar sales are on a decline as consumers are becoming more health conscious.

The Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corp. (aT) reported on Friday that last year’s sugar sales totaled 161.43 billion won, down by 26.6 percent since 2015.

In terms of sales proportion, sugar sales shrank from 87.7 percent in 2015 to 84.9 percent in 2019. Sales of processed sugar products, such as sugar cane syrup, shrank from 3 percent to 2.3 percent over the same period.

In contrast, the sales proportion of other sugar products, such as alternative sweeteners, expanded from 8.8 percent to 12.4 percent.

“As low-sugar diets are trending, natural sweeteners such as xylose, allulose and stevia are gaining popularity among consumers searching for low-calorie sweetness,” a representative from aT explained.

Domestic sugar production reached a total of 1.42 million tons last year, up by 1.6 percent compared to 1.4 million tons in 2015.
