SEOUL, June 28 (Korea Bizwire) — A post recently appeared on an online secondhand marketplace where products from the U.S. burger franchise Five Guys were being resold at higher prices.
Five Guys on Monday opened its first South Korean restaurant in Seoul’s Gangnam neighborhood.
Despite the rainy weather, around 400 people braved the long line, some of whom had been waiting overnight, in anticipation of the official store opening at 11 a.m.
On the opening day, a seller posted an offer on the Danggeun Market app, advertising two Five Guys cheeseburgers and a large order of french fries for 100,000 won (US$76.90).
Considering that a single cheeseburger costs 14,900 won and a large order of french fries costs 10,900 won, the seller added a markup of approximately 60,000 won.
Once this post went viral on other online communities, numerous netizens expressed their dissatisfaction, stating that it was unreasonable to impose such a significant markup.
However, in accordance with Danggeun Market’s policy, reselling hamburgers purchased from franchise restaurants is permitted as long as they remain unopened and in their original condition.
