SEOUL, April 28 (Korea Bizwire)A four-year-old cow in Korea which gave birth to two calves in a 45-day term is attracting attention.

The 39-month-old cow delivered a female calf on March 5. However, it gave birth to one more calf, a male, on April 19, after just 45 days. Both calves are healthy.

The cow was artificially inseminated on July 4 last year, but experienced estrus one month later and pregnancy was induced again. It gave birth to the first calf one month earlier than the expected delivery date of April 14. The gestation period of a cow is usually 280 days.

It is not common for a cow to have twins, but it is extremely rare for a cow to give birth to two calves in 45 days. The National Institute of Animal Science is now investigating the case, but has yet to find a precedent. It estimated that the two instances of artificial insemination succeeded in pregnancy.
