SEOUL, Sept. 3 (Korea Bizwire) – A recent study conducted by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family shows that when children get married, the parents of the groom spend about 80 million won, while the parents of the bride spend about 60 million won.
Due to the high costs of preparing a wedding, most brides and grooms receive financial help from their parents. Only 10.4 percent of the respondents replied that they did not get any help from their parents, while 43.4 percent answered that their parents paid more than 60 percent of the costs.
In the meantime, parents reported that they felt pressure in paying a considerable amount of money at once, with 60.3 percent of those who answered the survey saying that they felt the burden was too heavy for them.
Even so, 68 percent of parents answered that they should pay for their children’s wedding because it’s their duty. They showed their high responsibility to financially help their children, as 84.7 percent answered that if they had the ability, it would be good to pay for their children’s wedding.
However, a considerable number of young people took their parents burden for granted. A total of 64.8 percent of the younger generation answered that parents should pay for their wedding if they had the capacity. Also, many complained of stress because they had acquaintances that received more money from their in-laws compared to what they received.
Only 16.8 percent of parents reported that they received allowances from their married children. The average amount they received was 220,000 won.
In addition, only 14.6 percent of parents expected to get allowances from their children in the future.
