BUSAN, Nov. 28 (Korea Bizwire) – A new artistic photo zone featuring three distinctive lighthouse sculptures has been installed at the entrance of Chilam Port in Gijang, Busan, a coastal village known for its conger eel delicacies.
The Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries announced on November 26 that it has collaborated with the Gijang County to create an Instagram-worthy spot featuring bench sculptures modeled after the port’s three famous lighthouses.
The installation includes three-dimensional wave patterns on the ground, allowing visitors to capture all three of the port’s iconic lighthouses — shaped like a baseball, a seagull, and a conger eel — in a single frame against the backdrop of the sea.
The three lighthouses, installed between 2010 and 2012, serve both practical and symbolic purposes. The white baseball lighthouse (9.6 meters tall) and the red seagull lighthouse (12 meters) mark the shipping channel, while the yellow conger eel lighthouse (10 meters) serves as a warning beacon for vessels.
Each lighthouse design carries historical significance. The baseball lighthouse commemorates South Korea’s gold medal victory at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The seagull lighthouse represents Busan’s symbolic bird and captures the sunrise over Gijang’s waters, while the conger eel lighthouse pays homage to the village’s famous culinary heritage.
“These lighthouse sculptures and the new photo zone will not only provide visitors with memorable experiences but also help promote local tourism through social media,” said Kim Gang-on, director of navigation information facilities at the Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries.
“The project is particularly meaningful as it demonstrates successful cooperation between local and central governments, with Gijang County selecting the location and our office handling design and installation.”
The office has been actively incorporating artistic elements into the region’s maritime infrastructure since 2002, when it installed the World Cup commemorative lighthouse at Daebyeon Port. To date, it has established 17 decorative lighthouses throughout the Busan area.
