SEOUL, Nov. 6 (Korea Bizwire) — The Chinese government has revealed plans to construct a high-speed railway that will connect Mount Paektu in North Korea with China’s Liaoning Province at a cost of approximately 1.7 trillion won.
A Chinese government website, posted an announcement on the construction of the high-speed railway connecting Baihe County situated near Mount Paektu and Shenyang, the capital and largest city of China’s Liaoning Province.
The posting revealed that the construction of the high-speed railway would connect 13 rail stations in six major administrative jurisdictions in China, including the cities of Fushun, Tonghua, Baishan and Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture.
The new line will link over 430 kilometers of railroad. China intends to complete the construction project in 54 months by injecting more than 1 trillion won into the effort.
Experts say that the construction of the railway will be completed in 2022 or 2023 if it is initiated this year. The complete railway system will allow high-speed trains to operate at speeds of 350 kilometers per hour.
A railroad connecting Dunhua, a city in the Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture in Jilin province and Mount Paektu has been under construction since August of last year, reflecting a comment last year by a high-level Chinese official who stated that the government was willing to create a large-scale transportation system leading to Mount Paektu.
“More than 10 million people will visit Mount Paektu every year if this happens,” said the official.
